The Waterfront Country Club is the oldest club at Smith Mountain Lake, opening in 1981 with a conception dating back to 1977. Designed by George Dillon — formerly of the Fazio Design Group — our championship course sits on 750 acres of breathtaking Virginia countryside with 8.5 miles of pristine shoreline.
In 2021, a complete fairway restoration converted the course to Zeon Zoysia grass — delivering championship-quality conditions and reaffirming our commitment to excellence for every generation of member.

Conception & Vision
The dream of a premier private club at Smith Mountain Lake began. Designed by George Dillon — who trained under Tom Fazio — the original layout was conceived across 750 acres of pristine Virginia countryside, with 8.5 miles of shoreline as its breathtaking backdrop.
The Club Opens
Holes 1–8 and 18 opened in 1981, establishing The Waterfront as the oldest club at Smith Mountain Lake. The Original 9 Hole Loop set the foundation for a championship layout that would welcome generations of members and their families.
Championship Restoration
A complete fairway restoration and conversion to Zeon Zoysia grass in 2021 transformed the playing surface — delivering lush, championship-quality conditions and reaffirming our commitment to providing members with the finest private golf experience in Virginia.
